WHIPLASH in Mt Laurel Township NJ

Whiplash is a soft-tissue injury to the neck; it can also be described as neck sprain/strain. The most common injury sustained during an auto accident is a whiplash injury, most often occurring at slow speeds. It takes only a sudden change in speed to injure the neck.

Whiplash injuries are often the result of rear-end collisions, but they can occur from an impact in any direction, front, back, or the sides. Signs of injury may be present immediately after a motor vehicle accident or may be delayed for several days or even weeks.

When a part of the body is whipped back and then forward beyond its normal limits, micro-tears can develop in the surrounding ligaments. Yet many accident victims don't notice any pain at first. It's not until the micro-tears start to swell that the symptoms set in. (2):

Symptoms of Whiplash:

  • Blurred Vision
  • Neck/Low Back Pain
  • Neck/Low Back Stiffness
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Reduced Range of Motion of the Body
  • Pain of the Extremities (Shoulders, Arms, Legs, Hands, Feet)

CONCUSSION

According to the CDC, motor vehicle crashes were the third overall leading cause of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) among all age groups. (Other causes may also be caused by falls or sport accidents.) A TBI is caused by a sudden bump, blow, or jolt to the head that disrupts the normal function of the brain. (3)

Not all blows or jolts to the head result in a TBI. The severity of a TBI may range from "mild" (i.e., a brief change in mental status or consciousness) to "severe" (i.e., an extended period of unconsciousness or memory loss after the injury). Most TBI's that occur each year are mild, commonly called concussions.

Signs and symptoms generally show up soon after the injury. However, it may be unknown how severe the injury is at first and some symptoms may not show up for hours or days.

Some Signs that can be Observed:

  • Can't recall events prior to or after an accident.
  • Appears dazed or stunned.
  • Moves clumsily.
  • Answers questions slowly.
  • Loses consciousness (even briefly).
  • Shows mood, behavior, or personality changes.

Some Symptoms Reported:

  • Bothered by light or noise.
